Do Infomercials Deserve a Little More Respect?

Depending on who you ask, the infomercial industry could be worth anything from $200 billion to $250 billion, or even $300 billion.

Whatever the number, that’s pretty big. And as Jon Nathanson (now Slate columnist) pointed out in his exhaustive breakdown of the economics of infomercials on Priceonomics, in comparison, the U.S. network and cable industry was estimated at just $97 billion in 2013. So why isn’t Thom Jensen, the founder of the Perfect Bacon Bowl (which has shipped 2 million units since late 2013), getting the kind of adulatory coverage bestowed on Instagram, an app that was basically profitless when Facebook purchased it?

Chillow Review: Cold Pad Exceeds Expectations

Finally, I’ve found an “as seen on TV” product that not only does what it’s supposed to do, but actually exceeded my expectations.

I’d seen the Chillow, a cold pad placed inside a pillowcase, on TV and thought it might help the terrible headaches I’ve had since being injured over a year ago.

But, I don’t like ordering things over the phone or online, in addition to paying the high shipping/handling fees and hassles with returns.

Ford has split with longtime TV pitchman Mike Rowe. The former ‘Dirty Jobs’ host had pitched Ford cars and trucks for seven years in TV spots from Team Detroit.

Ford Motor Co. and longtime pitchman Mike Rowe, host of “Dirty Jobs,” have made a clean break.

Ford spokesman Chris Preuss confirmed today the Detroit automaker has parted ways with the TV personality and host of the Discovery Channel’s now cancelled show.

These items also are sold through bulk mail advertisements that use the slogan “as seen on TV!” The business can generate big profits for those who come up with successful products.

TV ads offer U.S. viewers all kinds of unconventional products like the Bacon Bowl — a device that molds fried bacon into an edible container.

There is the Eggie — which addresses the plight of those who hate to peel the shells off hard-boiled eggs — and apparently, there are a lot of them. Six million boxes of this product have been sold, much to the delight of Betsy Kaufman, who came up with the idea at her home in Houston.

So once again, Nancy Naeve is putting them to the test. She enlightens us on the Light Angel in this Does It Work?

When my alarm goes off at 2 am it is not this bright in the house. It’s more like this. I can barely see to pick up my dogs and get them downstairs. So imagine how hard it is to get clothes out of my closet with an overhead light that doesn’t work.
